Engineers Week 2018 - Barnacogue N.S.
We all love Engineers Week in Barnacogue N.S. We try as hard as we can to incorporate into our teaching and learning every day throughout this week - resulting in a very positive attitude towards science in our school.
Engineers Week started off with all classes watching the movie Dream Big. We then discussed the movie and began to understand what engineering is. Then working in groups we spent much of the week planning and carrying out various experiments - we designed a pin ball machine, a torch and a mini green house. We looked at chemical engineering and investigated the process of preserving food using salt & bread soda. We also drew a plan for a wormery, so that we could all build our own at home. We invited parents in at the end of Engineers week to view our great work. |
Mummifying Investigations!! |
An 'Eggy' Experiment
|
We loved an experiment that we carried out which tested the effects of vinegar, coke and water on an egg shell. It resulted in the water having no effect, the coke turning the egg shell darker and the vinegar almost making the shell disintegrate completely!!! We loved seeing what would happen when we dropped the Vinegar egg.......watch our slow mo video to see the result!

famous landmarks
|
Throughout the week, the children worked in groups to recreate famous landmarks from European countries - The Eiffel Tower, The Colosseum, The Leaning Tower of Pisa & The Parthenon. The children studied the structures and then planned and designed their constructions using junk. They then studied and using google docs, created a short project about their building. I'm sure you will agree they did a fantastic job!
Engineering ProjectsAll children from Senior Infants to 6th Class (and even one of the Junior Infants) chose an engineering project to work on at home over the week. They then presented their constructions to the school. There were amazing and innovative designs and some very proud junior engineers!
